Slippin’ and Sliddin’ in Aktobe

We woke up to Aktobe being blanketed with a sheet of ice. I am not sure why it didn’t fall as snow because it sure was cold and windy enough. Milon almost lost it down the stairs to our apartment. None of us realized just how icy it was, and he was the first out the door.

Leah was very cranky today. We were all very glad we could hand her back to the nannies! She sounds like a purring cat. She had a bandage wrapped around her head with gauze and some blood on it. We don’t know what happened, but it looks like she was in a fight.

We decided to venture out after our morning visit despite the icy conditions. We debated for awhile which was worse, boredom or a broken leg and all choose the broken leg! We went to a mall called UYM which had a terrific cafeteria in the basement. The food was excellent and we were all excited to have something different to eat! It was like a big mystery what everyone got and everything was delicious. Even Davis got pasta with a Turkish sauce on it which he loved! Milon got something that looked like a hamburger with and egg and cheese on top. We all got potstickers with meat inside, I got rice with the Turkish sauce. We also got something that looked like ground chicken with spices rolled in breadcrumbs. All three of us ate for $10!

We then went back to the Alia market and found some Kazakhstan chocolate that we bought a ton of. I also bought an apron for Leah that has a Russian design on it.

We can’t believe that both of these markets and cafeteria are right behind the soccer stadium (two steps from our apartment) and we have been in Aktobe for 5 weeks and did not know about them! We could have eaten in the cafeteria everyday and spent time browsing in the stores. Thank you Evi and Michel (our Belgian friends) for sharing the information your agency provided! We should have hired you as our tour guides! (BTW, we found the Kazakh chocolate).

Davis has been in pain with an ear infection all day. Poor thing has also had constant diarrhea and vomiting this afternoon. He had a shower this morning and we are not sure if he drank some of the water or if it was all the pasta and sauce he ate for lunch…or could be all the chocolate he taste tested. My mom and I stayed home with him for the afternoon visit. Milon came back and said Leah throw up all over him. Hmm…I think there might be a connection here. We are going to take a break from each other tomorrow to avoid passing the germs back and forth.

Milon has his passport back and is able to leave Wednesday; however, all the flights into Almaty are booked. He will have to leave Thursday instead and get into RDU on Saturday.

Oh, I feel for you guys. I wish I was closer to help you out. I know how miserable Davis must be. The boys still ask if Davis and GiGi are in Kazakhstan everyday. They want you to know that they miss all of you terribly. Sounds like things are getting easier and better. Can't wait to hear from you tomorrow.
